Why Do Good SEOs Cost So Much?

Working as an SEO consultant, many times I have come across situations where I have to explain why an SEO needs to devote sufficient hours consistently on any website to rank it on top SERPs and also maintain its position. The two most important concerns and demands raised by the clients are:

  • Show me the result in one month
  • Why should I pay so much for something which is so simple and when I can get the (same services)? at a cheaper cost?

Well to answer the first question, I have simply one thing to say that SEO is not a rocket science. Every recipe has a minimum cooking time and to prepare a wholesome and delicious meal (read great SEO results), one needs to put hours, days and months of hard work and consistent efforts.  There are definitely many ways and techniques that are categorized as black hat SEO techniques, which may help you to get quick results, but one thing is sure. These results are not long lasting and your website is definitely going to be penalised the moment search engines find out the trick. Every SEO consultant who practices white hat ethical SEO approach would not approve of these techniques and will require a minimum time frame to show you the results. Have faith in them and trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Following story can answer the second concern wonderfully:

There was a man who couldn’t get his car to start. He knew a lot about cars, but he still couldn’t figure out what was going on. He found a mechanic in the yellow pages and called him up to take a look at his car. The mechanic had been fixing cars since he was a boy. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and he went to work as soon as he arrived. He carefully inspected the engine, top to bottom. The owner of the car stood there patiently as the old man looked things over. The old man then reached in his tool bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. The engine was fixed!

A week later the owner received a bill from the car mechanic for $1,000.

“What?!” the owner exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!” So he wrote the mechanic a note saying, “Please send me an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read,

Tapping with a hammer……….….$2

Knowing exactly where to tap………………$998

Of course, knowing what to do is important. Honestly the what is usually pretty easy to learn. In the story, the mechanic could have told the man the what in 30 seconds over the phone: tap just the right spot with a hammer.

The tough part, though, is the how. Telling the man the car could be fixed by tapping it with a hammer would have told them the what… but without the how that knowledge would do him little good. Knowing which hammer to use and precisely where and exactly how hard to tap with that hammer — therein lies the skill.

Similarly, for instance, it’s one thing to understand, you need unique SEO tags for each page. It’s quite another thing to know how to write title tags that effectively incorporate each page’s most important target search phrase and catch snippets for the description that not only incorporates the right frequency and density of target search phrases but also encourages maximum click-throughs from the search results. Simply realizing more high-quality links pointing to a web page can derive better results is not the same as knowing the parameters that distinguish a good link from a bad link how to go about getting those links.

The what can be learnt in minutes. The how takes considerably more time, effort and skill.

It’s the how you pay for when you hire an expert, whether it’s an accountant, a lawyer or an SEO consultant. Those who have devoted the time, put forth the effort and learned the skill sufficient to be considered “experts” are entitled to charge appropriately for their hard-won knowledge.

When you hire a top notch SEO consultant you are paying for his / her creativity, ingenuity, and experience.
